THE SWORD & SORCERY RULES

Sword & Sorcery is a sub-genre as yet untested on this blog.

It is a type of High Fantasy usually targeting an adult with less reliance on magic, and with more muscly barbarians and scantly (or un-) clad women.

The following Sword & Sorcery films which were tested as part of the High Fantasy test and will be retested again if/when Sword & Sorcery is tested:

Seven other film will need to complete the ten.

I want to do at least one other Robert E Howard/Conan related film, so those options are:

  • Conan the Destroyer (1984)
  • Red Sonja (1985)
  • Kull the Conqueror (1997)
  • Conan the Barbarian (2011)

At least one from the similar sub-genre Pepla or Sword & Sandals:

  • Hercules (1957)
  • Son of Samson (1960)
  • Urus, Son of Hercules (1960)
  • Samson (1961)
  • Goliath & the Barbarians (1960)

At least one with a female "barbarian" lead:

    • She (1982)
    • Sorceress (1982)
    • Barbarian Queen (1985)
    • Red Sonja (1985) *see also Conan related above.
    • Amazons (1986)
    • She-Wolves of the Wasteland (1988)

At least one post-apocalyptic Sword & Sorcery film:

    • She (1982) * See female lead above.
    • Yor, the Hunter From The Future (1983)
    • Beowulf (1999)
    • She-Wolves of the Wasteland (1988) * See female lead above.

    At least one antecedent:

    • Die Nibelungen (1924)
    • The Thief of Bagdad (1940)
    • The Iron Crown (1941)
    • Kashchey the Deathless (1944)
    • The Magic Sword (1950)
    • Prince Valiant (1954)
    • The Sword & the Dragon (1956)
As many of the first films in a series as possible:

    • Ator l'invincibile (1982)
    • The Beastmaster (1982)
    • Deathstalker (1983)
    • The Scorpion King (2002)

As many of these standalone films as possibe:

    • Hawk the Slayer (1980)
    • The Barbarians (1987)
    • Masters of the Universe (1987)

Any of the categories above need additional film suggestions?  Any of the listing need to be tested or should be avoided?  Any new categories that I need a film from?  Any thoughts or suggestions, please comment below...
