SLASHER FILM RULES - Analysis

Although I'm calling these Slasher Film Rules, the can apply to a range of horror sub-genres.

Ten films were tested:
Of course, these films say nothing about the genre as a whole.  Certainly things can be said about the films, though.  They are usually bigger name films, smaller low-budget or less successful films may rely on the rules more.  They are mostly early films, and may have helped develop the rules rather than following them.  One is a post modern film in which the characters know the rules.  About half may not be purely "slasher" films and may not need to follow the rules.  Most are first films in a series and thus may follow the rules less.

Victims not killed in the narrative (previous victims in Psycho or Wolf Creek for example) are not being counted.  An extreme example of this is Paul Holt in Friday the 13th Part 2 who "disappeared" during a fight with Jason and who will be counted as alive since his death or body was never shown on-screen.  I'm not calling that a definitive answer for what happened to him, but rather, I need to make a call one way of the other.

Rule #1 - A Warning Will Come From...

Unheeded Warning:  (3) Friday the 13th; Friday the 13th Part 2; A Nightmare on Elm St.
Unheard Warning:  (2)  Night of the Living Dead; Alien.
  • Night of the Living Dead - the radio only started working after Barbra and Jonny arrived at the graveyard and was turned off.
  • Alien - It was only once members of the crew were on the alien ship that Ripley realised that the message was a warning (may count as a Withheld Warning as the company probably knew before they sent them.
Withheld Warning:  (2)  Halloween, Silent Night, Deadly Night.
  • Halloween - Although Loomis warned the police, he told them not to scare the public.  The local kids know not to go near the old Meyers' place, but then that doesn't get anyone killed.
  • Silent Night, Deadly Night - The Sister knew something was up.  Didn't really tell anyone.
No Warning: (3) Psycho, Scream, Wolf Creek.
  • Although (seemingly jokingly) the killer in Wolf Creek does say he thinks it is his duty to rid the outback of tourists.
Obviously, the rule gets between 30% and 70% depending how strict you want to be.

Rule #2 - There Will Be T&A
Nudity: (5)  Night of the Living Dead; Halloween; Friday the 13th; Friday the 13th Part 2; Silent Night Deadly Night.
Suggested Nudity: (3)  Psycho; A Nightmare on Elm St; Wolf Creek.
  • Suggested nudity includes woman topless but only shown from behind, or people presumably fully nude but editing means you don't see anything.
No Nudity: (2)  Alien; Scream.
  • And even Alien had underwear and butt-crack.
  • Sidney flashed her boyfriend, but the viewer saw nothing.
So 50% to 70%.

Rule #3 - Death Will Be A Punishment For...

Some of the films had the killer specifically targeting transgressors.
  • Psycho - "mother" didn't like women as they led poor boys like Norman astray.
  • Friday the 13th - Mrs Vorshees targeted camp councilors because they indulged in sex and drugs, etc, instead of properly supervising her son.
  • Silent Night, Deadly Night - "Santa" is killing everyone he thinks is "naughty."
No Innocents Killed (including no Annoying Characters killed):  (0)
Only Transgressors Killed (but No Innocents Killed, but Annoying Character were):  (2) Psycho; Friday the 13th; Friday the 13th Part 2.
Innocents Killed:  (7)  Night of the Living Dead; Halloween; Alien; A Nightmare on Elm St; Silent Night, Deadly Night; Scream; Wolf Creek.
So Only Transgressors killed is 0% to 30% depending on if you think being annoying is a transgression.

All Transgressors Killed:  (2)  Halloween; A Nightmare on Elm Street.
    • Depending on whether you count the parent's role in the killing of Freddy Kruger to be transgression.  In that case at least one is killed and at least one survives.  However, the punishment is their children being endangered.
No Trangressors in Film:  (2)  Night of the Living Dead, Alien.
    • Unless you count Johnny & Harry (in Living Dead) and Parker, Brett & Lambert (in Alien) as annoying that that as transgression.  All those are killed.
Transgressors Survived:  (6)  Psycho; Friday the 13th; Friday the 13th Part 2; Silent Night, Deadly Night; Scream; Wolf Creek.

So 20% to 25% killed depending on if you think being annoying is transgression.

There are no films in which all transgressors and only transgressors are killed.  Even if you include annoying characters, the three films that include them have others survive.  So:  0%.

    Rule #4 - Never Go...

    A:  Down to the Basement

No Basements:  (4)  Halloween; Friday the 13th; Friday the 13th Part 2; Wolf Creek.
Basement Like Area (Killed):  (2)  Alien; Scream.
Killed After Leaving Basement:  (1)  Silent Night, Deadly Night (3).
Some Killed in Basement/Some Survived:  (1)  Night of the Living Dead (2/1).
Endangered By Going Down Into the Basement:  (1)  Psycho.
Going Down to Basement A Good Thing:  (1)  A Nightmare on Elm Street.
Films in which Basement (like area) is dangerous 83%, can kill 67%, always fatal 50%.  Chance of dying per person entering basement:  70%.

    B:  Upstairs

No Upstairs:  (3)  AlienFriday the 13th; Wolf Creek.
    Some Killed/Some Endangered:  (1)  Halloween (2/3).

    Chased Upstairs:  (1)  Scream.
Safe:  (3)  PsychoNight of the Living Dead (2); Silent Night, Deadly Night.
Film in which going upstairs is dangerous 57%, can kill 43%, always fatal 0%.  Chance of dying per person going upstairs:  64%.

    C:  For A Shower

No Showering:  (6)  Night of the Living DeadHalloweenFriday the 13th Part 2Silent Night, Deadly Night; ScreamWolf Creek.
Killed After Shower-like Event:  (1)  Alien.
Killed Before Shower:  (1)  Friday the 13th.
    Killed In Shower:  (1)  Psycho.
Endangered in Bath:  (1):  A Nightmare on Elm Street.
Films in which showering (or having a bath, or standing under a leak) or going for a shower is dangerous 100%, fatal 75%.

    D:  Old Sheds or Outbuildings

No Outbuildings:  (4)  PsychoNight of the Living Dead; A Nightmare on Elm Street; Scream.
    Endangered (Later Killed):  (1)  Halloween.
Killed Leaving Outbuilding:  (2)  Silent Night, Deadly Night.
Endangered (Survived) - Escape Pod:  (1)  Alien.
Pretty Much All Outbuildings:  (3)  Friday the 13thFriday the 13th Part 2Wolf Creek.

    E:  Running into the Forest:

No Forest:  (7)  PsychoNight of the Living DeadHalloweenAlien; Silent Night, Deadly NightA Nightmare on Elm StreetScream.
    Killed:  (1)  Friday the 13th.
Endangered But Survived:  (1)  Friday the 13th Part 2 (2).
Some Lived/Some Died:  Wolf Creek (2/1).

    F:  Anywhere Alone

N/A:  (3)  Night of the Living DeadHalloweenFriday the 13th Part 2.
    Endangered:  (1)  Psycho.
    Killed/Survived:  (3)  Friday the 13th (1/1); Scream (4/1); Wolf Creek (2/1).
Killed:  (2)  Alien (3); Silent Night, Deadly Night.
Survived:  (1)  A Nightmare on Elm Street.

    G:  Anywhere Remote

Isolated Location:  (6)  PsychoNight of the Living DeadAlien; Friday the 13thFriday the 13th Part 2Wolf Creek.
Surburbia:  (4)  HalloweenSilent Night, Deadly Night; A Nightmare on Elm StreetScream.

Rule #5 - Order of Death...

A:  The First Person on Screen

    First Person Dies First:  (0).
One of the First People Dies First:  (2)  Night of the Living Dead;  Friday the 13th.
    • A number of people appear on screen at the same time, one or more of them are the first person/people killed, but others survive.
First Fully Seen Person Dies First:  (4)  Psycho; Alien; Friday the 13th Part 2; A Nightmare on Elm St.
    • A person is partially seen on screen before the first victim, the first person who we fully see (especially face) is the first to die.
One of the First Fully Seen People Dies First:  (1) Halloween.
First Person Among Die Early:  (1)  Scream.
One of the First People on Screen Dies Early:  (1)  Silent Night, Deadly Night.
The First People to Appear On Screen Survive:  (1)  Wolf Creek.
0% for the sole first person to appear to die first, reaching up to 90% of at least one of the first people to appear on screen dying early.

    Bonus Round:
Film begins with Killer POV:  (2)  Halloween; Friday the 13th.
Killer is First Person Seen (Partially Only):  (1)  A Nightmare on Elm Street.
Killer is Second Person Seen (Partially Only):  (1)  Friday the 13th Part 2.
Killer is One of the First Fully Seen People:  (1)  Silent Night, Deadly Night.
Killer does not appear early:  (5)  Psycho; Night of the Living Dead; Alien; Scream; Wolf Creek.

B:  The Black Man dies First

    Minority Character Killed First:  (0).
No Minority Characters:  (7)  Psycho; Halloween; Friday the 13th;  A Nightmare on Elm St;  Silent Night, Deadly Night; Scream; Wolf Creek.
No Minority Characters Endangered:  (1)  Friday the 13th Part 2.
Minority Character Dies Second Last:  (1)  Alien.
Minority Character Dies Last:  (1)  Night of the Living Dead.
For the 3 films of this ten that had minority characters, this rule did not hold at all.

    C:  The Stoner

No Stoners:  (7)  Psycho; Night of the Living Dead; Alien; A Nightmare on Elm St; Silent Night, Deadly Night; Scream; Wolf Creek.
Some Drug Users Survive:  (3)  Halloween; Friday the 13th; Friday the 13th Part 2.

    • It should be noted that "some drug users" include one off use and someone mentioning that the drugs he found are better then his own.  There are no stereotypical stoner characters in the films used.

First of Main Characters Killed:  ()  Halloween (Annie).
Killed Late:  ()  Friday the 13th (Brenda).
Last Killed:  ()  Friday the 13th (Bill).

    D:  The Bimbo

A problematic category, mostly because it basically it is forced to cover all female characters except the final girl, it equates female sexual activity (or even having a desirable figure) with dumbness.  It also covers multiple characters in most of the films so can have early and later deaths.
    1. Marion (Psycho) - Sexually active, sexualised, not dumb but made mistakes.
    2. Judy (Night of the Living Dead) - Possible boyfriend, slightly sexualised, dumb.
    3. Judith (Halloween) - Sexually active, sexualised, unknown intelligence.
    4. Annie Brackett (Halloween) - Sexually active, sexualised, dumb.
    5. Lynda  (Halloween) - Sexually active, sexualised, dumb.
    6. Claudette (Friday the 13th) - Sexually active, partially sexualised, playing dumb.
    7. Annie (Friday the 13th) - Unknown, partially sexualised, dumb.
    8. Marcie (Friday the 13th) - Sexually active, sexualised, dumb.
    9. Brenda (Friday the 13th) - Probably sexually active, sexualised, smart.
    10. Terry (Friday the 13th Part 2) - Unknown, sexualised, dumb.
    11. Sandra (Friday the 13th Part 2) - Sexually active, sexualised, dumb.
    12. Vicky (Friday the 13th Part 2) - Sexually active, sexualised, varies.
    13. Pamela (Silent Night Deadly Night) - Possibly sexually active, sexualised, dumb.
    14. Denise  (Silent Night Deadly Night) - Sexually active, sexualised, dumb.
    15. Tina (A Nightmare on Elm Street) - Sexually active, sexualised, dumb.
    16. Casey (Scream) - Possibly sexually active, slightly sexualised, smart.
    17. Tatum (Scream) - Sexually active, sexualised, dumb.
    18. Kristy (Wolf Creek) - Sexually active, slightly sexualised, varies.
    First Killed:  (3) 1; 3; 15.
    Killed Early:  (7) 2; 4; 6; 7; 10; 13; 16.
    • Judy was killed in the same explosion that killed Tom.  They were the first from the house killed (Johnny was killed earlier).
    • Annie was the first of Laurie's friend's killed (Judith was killed years earlier and a random mechanic was killed).
    • Claudette was killed immediately after the boy she was about to have sex with; Annie (from Friday the 13th) the first killed in the present.
    • Although Terry was a middle kill in the movie, she was the second in the killer's real spree.
    • Pamela was Tommy's second kill (years earlier, the unnamed killer killed 3 others).
    Middle Kills:  (5)  8; 9; 11; 14; 17.
    • Marcie and Brenda were the 3rd and 4th killed of the 6 killed at the camp.
    • Sandra and Mark were killed simulateously, near the end of Jason's spree.
    • Tatum was kill #5 of 6, but the killers tried to kill at least 5 people after her.
    Last Killed:  (3) 5;  12; 18.

A lot are early kills, with many of the later kills following earlier "bimbo" kills.

    E:  The Nerdy/Funny Guy

No Nerdy/Funny Guy:  (5)  Psycho; Halloween; Silent Night, Deadly Night; A Nightmare on Elm Street; Wolf Creek.
Killed First:  (1)  Night of the Living Dead.
Killed Early:  (2)  Alien; Friday the 13th.
    • You might count Brett from Alien here.  He's also the first actively killed by the Alien, with Cane killed by its birth.
    • ... from Friday the 13th is a classic example, as soon as he's killed people stop caring where he is.  He's the first person killed at the camp in the present day (Annie killed on the way to the camp, others killed years earlier.)
Nerdy/Funny Guy Not Endangered:  (1)  Friday the 13th Part 2.
    • He's the only non-background character not to return to the camp after heading out drinking.
    Nerdy/Funny Guy Survives:  (1)  Scream.

20% killed first, 60% killed early, 0% killed late, 40% survive.

    F:  The Macho Jerk

Almost as problematic as the Bimbo, but not quite.  Basically, this is a male character that gets sex, and it seems only macho jerks get sex.

    No Jerks:  (1)  Wolf Creek.

Killed First:  (2)  Friday the 13th; Scream (possibly).

Killed Early:  (2)  Alien (possibly); A Nightmare on Elm Street.

First of Group Killed:  (2)  Friday the 13th Part 2; Silent Night, Deadly Night.

Killed in the Middle:  (1)  Night of the Living Dead.

Killed Late:  (5)  Halloween; Alien (possibly); Friday the 13th; Friday the 13th Part 2Silent Night, Deadly Night.

    Survives:  (1)  Psycho (possibly).

    Obviously skewed to later kills.

    G:  The Protector

The Protector has a lot of crossover with the Sensitive Guy, but is usually an older male character.  That said there are older male characters who fail to fulfil the protector role.

No Protectors:  (2)  Night of the Living Dead; Wolf Creek.
Failed/Dubious Protectors:  (3)  Psycho; Alien; Friday the 13th (all killed)
    Protector Killed:  (0)
Protector Survived:  (5)  Halloween; Friday the 13th Part 2; Silent Night, Deadly Night; A Nightmare on Elm Street; Scream.

In the films tested, The Protector seems to have a high survival rate, between 62.5% and 100% depending on who you count.

    H:  The Sensitive Guy.

No Sensitive Guy:  (3)  Halloween, Alien, Scream.
Sensitive Guy Killed in the Middle:  (1)  Friday the 13th Part 2  (Mark).
Sensitive Guy Killed Second Last:  (1)  A Nightmare on Elm Street
Sensitive Guy Killed Last:  (3)  Night of the Living Dead; Friday the 13th; Silent Night, Deadly Night.
    • Ben from Night of the Living Dead could be counted as the "Final Girl" (see below)
Sensitive Guy Survives:  (3)  Psycho; Friday the 13th Part 2 (Paul); Wolf Creek.

    • Sam from Psycho settles into the role after a macho start.
    • If Paul survived.  He counts as Last Killed otherwise.
    • Ben from Wolf Creek could be counted as the "Final Girl" (see below)
The Sensitive Guy clearly dies later than other character, if he dies at all.

    I:  Children and animals

All Children Live:  (3)  Halloween; A Nightmare on Elm St; Silent Night, Deadly Night.
No Children:  (6)  Psycho; Alien; Friday the 13th; Friday the 13th Part 2; Scream; Wolf Creek.
Children Die:  (1)  Night of the Living Dead.

Children survived in 75% of the films, and since multiple children appeared the films they survived and only one in Night of the Living Dead, they have a much higher survival rate.

    Animal Lives (1)  Alien.
No Animals: (6)  Psycho; Night of the Living Dead; Silent Night, Deadly Night; A Nightmare on Elm Street; Scream; Wolf Creek.
    Pet Dies:  (1)  Halloween.
Other Animal Dies:  (2)  Friday the 13th (snake); Friday the 13th Part 2 (unknown animal found, fake out for the pet dog later shown to survive - probably)

    J:  Final girl

Final Girl Dies (.5)  Wolf Creek*.
Final Boy Dies:  (1) Night of the Living Dead.
No Final Girl or Boy:  (1) Silent Night, Deadly Night
Final Girl Lives:  (6) Psycho; Halloween; Friday the 13th; Friday the 13th Part 2; A Nightmare on Elm Street; Scream
Final Boy Lives:  (.5)  Wolf Creek*.

    * If you count the obvious Final Girl in Wolf Creek as a Final Girl, then there's one death of a final girl (and the first death in that movie not even the final girl killed), if you count the surviving male as a Final Boy (even though he just runs away and attempts no rescues) then it's not.

    Final Girls survival rate 85 - 100%.
    Final Boy survival rate 0 - 50%.

    Bonus Round:
Previous Final Girl Killed:  (1)  Friday the 13th Part 2.

Rule #6 - Especially When They Are Most Needed, The Following Things Cannot Be Relied On…

    A:  Communications devices
    B:  Lighting
    C:  Vehicular Transport
    D:  Your own legs
    E:  The Authorities
    F:  Weapons
    G:  Escape routes

Rule #7 - The Final Girl

    See 5J for more information.

    A:  Final

If you include Liz from Wolf Creek, who was the first female killed, then not all.  Otherwise they are all the final survivor, among the group of survivors or the last person killed.

    B:  Girl

Seven of the films had a Final Girl, one didn't have any character properly fitting the role, one had a final boy.  If you include Ben from Wolf Creek it's 2 final boys (both called Ben), if you include Liz it's eight final girls.

    C:  Boyish

The Bens are male.  They don't have uni-sex names or dress in a feminine manner.

    i.  Laurie and Sidney have unisex names, Ripley goes by her surname a masculine trait, but shared by all characters on the Nostromo.  With Liz:  37.5%; 43% with out.
ii.  Both Ripley and Lambert (Alien) dress masculinely, it's space in the future, so Ripley no more so than Lambert.  Laurie (Halloween), Ginny (Friday the 13th Part 2), Sidney (Scream) slightly.  Alice (Friday the 13th), Nancy (A Nightmare on Elm Street) usually.   71.5%.  With Liz, who does, 75%.  But some of those are very subjective and change... well... with clothes changes.
iii.  Alice (Friday the 13th), yes.  Lila (Psycho), Laurie (Halloween) appears so.  Ripley (Alien), hard to say.  Ginny (Friday the 13th Part 2) hard to say, smaller than Sandra's, on par with Vicky and Terry's.  Nancy appears bigger than Tina in A Nightmare on Elm Street.  Sidney and Tatum (Scream) about the same, but Sidney wears baggier clothes more often to hide it.  If we count Liz in Wolf Creek, Kristy certainly wins.  It certainly seems mostly smaller, or deliberately dressed to hide them if bigger.  I'm not doing percentages, I already feel creepy enough about the time I've spent of this point.

    D:  Well-drawn

As the main character and the one that survives longest, they will get the most story, so by default.  This is why there is some Liz/Ben conflict.  She's certainly set up as the final girl.

    E:  Virginal & innocent

It's really hard to say for any of these, and I'm only going by their actions on screen in the actual film in question.  Maybe some of these characters is jumping in and out of bed drunk and stoned usually, but in the film in question this is their actions.

An important modifier is how they are represented on screen, as well, usually, the Final Girl is shown a lot more innocently, as noted with the baggier clothing in 7Ciii above.  I'm sure Lila Crane gets changed and showers, but it is her sister shown in her underwear and naked on screen.  There are exceptions to this however.  In A Nightmare on Elm Street, Tina is shown slightly see-through and slightly unbuttoned, but the Final Girl Nancy is naked in the bath and changes shirts showing some sideboob.  Likewise Final Girls Lt Ripley and Liz Hunter are shown wearing less than the other female in their films (although nothing is shown).  But these are exceptions.

    F:  Will be reborn

Many girls who don't make it until the end of the film become paralysed with fear and never recover.  Most notably, Barbra in Night of the Living Dead, scripted to be the Final Girl, but they liked her fear-acting so much they kept it.  Others, like Lambert in Aliens, Vicky in Friday the 13th Part 2 and for much of the second half of the film Kristy in Wolf Creek.  The Final Girl usually breaks out of that and is reborn as a warrior to fight the killer.  Unfortunately, they often lapse and are reborn a number of times and can end the film quite damaged.  This back and forth makes it hard to quantify.
An important thing to note is that The Bens didn't go through the rebirth process:  the Ben in Night of the Living Dead was strong all the way through, and Ben Mitchell just ran.

Rule #8 - The Killer has a connection to...

    A:  The Location
Yes:  (6)  Psycho; Halloween; Friday the 13th; Friday the 13th Part 2; A Nightmare on Elm Street; Scream.
Maybe:  (3)  Night of the Living Dead; Alien; Wolf Creek.

No:  (6)  Halloween; Friday the 13th Part 2; A Nightmare on Elm Street; Silent Night, Deadly Night; Scream; Wolf Creek.

Only 20% - 40% depending on your definitions.

    F:   A Specific Look
Yes:  (10)  PsychoNight of the Living Dead; Halloween; Alien; Friday the 13th; Friday the 13th Part 2; A Nightmare on Elm Street; Silent Night, Deadly Night; Scream; Wolf Creek.
    No:  (0)

    Seems to be true.

    G:   A Specific Weapon
Yes:  (8)  PsychoNight of the Living Dead; Halloween; Alien; Friday the 13th; Friday the 13th Part 2; A Nightmare on Elm Street; Scream.

80% although many also use any weapon handy.

Rule #9 - Evil Never Dies...

A:   Always Kill the Bad Guy Twice

    Not Thought Dead:  (1)  Psycho.
Someone Else Killed:  (1)  Silent Night, Deadly Night.
Undead: (1)  Night of the Living Dead.
Collapse:  (6)  Halloween; Friday the 13th; Friday the 13th Part 2; A Nightmare on Elm Street; Scream; Wolf Creek.
Thought to be Killed:  (1)  Alien.

Occurred in up to 90% of films.

    B:   Even Then

Killed:  (2)  Silent Night, Deadly Night; Scream.
Not Killed:  (2)  Psycho; Wolf Creek.
Undead:  (1)  Night of the Living Dead.
    Disappears:  (1)  Halloween.
Unknown:  (2)  Alien; Friday the 13th Part 2.
Dreamy-Weamy:  (2)  Friday the 13th; A Nightmare on Elm Street.

Occurred in up to 60% of films.

    C:   Evil Is Immortal

Killed:  (2)  Scream; Friday the 13th.
    Escaped:  (2)  Halloween; Wolf Creek.
    Unknown:  (1)  Alien.
Influence:  (2)  Psycho; Silent Night, Deadly Night.
    • Norman Bates' dead mother lives on in his mind.
Undead:  (2)  Night of the Living DeadA Nightmare on Elm Street.

Literally true in 20-30% of the films, figuratively true in another 20% of the films.

Rule #10 - The Sequel Will Be Bigger/More Formulaic

Only one sequel was tested, Friday the 13th Part 2 , as tested on that page showed the two films seemed about equal.
